With Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez on hiatus (don't ask me to acknowledge a permanent breakup), and Prince Harry and the duchess formerly known as Meghan Markle all settled down and royally married, a shiny new couple has risen like a phoenix to capture the Internet's imagination: Ariana Grande and Saturday Night Live's Pete Davidson, as random as that may be.
A mere two weeks ago, People broke the news that the 24-year-old pop superstar was dating the lesser-known comic, also 24, noting that it was "very casual." But evidence to the contrary surfaced on Instagram over the weekend, with L.A. tattoo artist London Reese sharing that he inked Grande's initials on Davidson's thumb and tatooed the singer's trademark bunny mask (made famous by her "Dangerous Woman" video) on Davidson's neck. Twitter sleuths have pointed out that these may not even be the couple's first love tattoos, as both Grande and Davidson appear to have tiny clouds inked on their middle fingers. Twitter's collective reply was something to the effect of: two weeks of public dating and Davidson has already altered his skin with Grande's initials and, yet, 20 years with my husband/wife and nothing?
Will this ink will go the way of Johnny Depp's "Winona"-turned-"Wino Forever?" Only time will tell. Certainly, the relationship is rocketing Davidson into another stratosphere of fame. But, for now, this budding relationship has everything: celebrity ex drama, copious Instagram PDA and, naturally, Harry Potter cloaks. You are cordially invited down the rabbit hole.
Grande and Davidson reportedly first met in 2016 when she was the host and musical guest at SNL. But, back then, she was dating rapper Mac Miller and Davidson was with writer-actress Cazzie David, daughter of Larry. (Is this all a "Who Weekly" episode waiting to happen? I'd venture to say so.) But after Grande and Miller announced their breakup in May of this year (with Grande pledging that she still loved him "endlessly," of course) and Davidson and David splitting up that same month, Grande and Davidson are spotted canoodling backstage at the Billboard Music Awards. Not long after, Davidson makes it "Insta official" with a photo of him and Grande at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
Grande later doubles down with your standard closed-eyed, blissed-out kiss pic.
The plot thickened over the weekend as the singer and the comic headed to Atlantic City, where Davidson had a stand-up gig at the Borgata, and reportedly joked that he "got very, very high" before the show. (This was worrying to some, as last March, Davidson announced he was sober for the first time in eight years.)
Heightening the Internet's intrigue with Grandavidson (just something I'm trying out) is the fact that they evidently still have to contend with their famous-ish exes. Miller was arrested on drunk driving and hit and run charges in May after allegedly striking a power pole in California's San Fernando Valley and fleeing the scene. The incident prompted some fans to link Miller's accident to his breakup from Grande and suggest the "No Tears Left to Cry" singer was somehow at fault, a claim she fired back against, tweeting a lengthy note that said in part, "I am not a babysitter or a mother and no woman should feel that they need to be."
As for Davidson's ex, David: over the weekend she perfected the art of the "I'm Not Angry At my Ex Instagram." The tousled hair, the soft lighting... it all screams, "Grandavidson who?" (Or as Amy Schumer commented: "You're Amal".) At least we know that when it comes to breakups, David knows what she's doing.
