Each tattoo has a special meaning for the singer.
We already know how cool Selena Gomez is — but her tattoos may be even cooler. The singer actually has quite a few tattoos. Selena is obviously a fan of delicate but impactful pieces of ink — and each one has a special meaning behind it.
Although Selena's tattoo choices are nothing short of amazing, the meanings behind them that are what really makes them unique. Each of her tattoos has a special place in the pop singer's heart and each one has a deeper meaning. All of Selena's tattoos are symbolic of something significant to her life or something she is passionate about.
So, what kind of tattoos does the songstress have? And what exactly are the important meanings behind them? We've broken down all of Selena Gomez's tattoo meanings.
1. Music Note
This was Selena's very first venture into tattoos. She even commented in an interview that this is what started her love of getting tattoos. "I wanted something small to test the waters," she says. "Now I'm addicted."
2. "G" Tattoo
Gomez has a small "G" tattooed behind her ear. Some people had first mistaken the letter for a J, thinking it was meant for her then-boyfriend Justin Bieber. However, Gomez explained that it was, indeed, a G and it stood for her little sister, whose name is Gracie.
3. Roman Numerals
On the back of her neck, Selena has the Roman Numerals "LXXVI" tattooed on her. When the singer first got the body art, she said that it was "a tribute to a family member." It was then later revealed that the numbers actually stood for her mother's birth date.
4. Right Hip Tattoo
In 2013, Selena was spotted with a new tattoo. This time, it was a tiny message written on her hip and it was so small that no one was able to quite make out what it said. Luckily, Selena cleared it up — and no, once again it had nothing to do with JB (as many had suspected). "It's my favorite Bible verse," Selena explained. "It's Philippians 4:13. 'I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
5. Left Hip Tattoo
Selena got her other hip inked, too. The tattoo consists of the letter x followed by a 3 and a 1. The singer revealed that it was a date, specifically from many years ago when she had met one of her closest friends.
6. Back Tattoo
Gomez got herself inked once again in 2014. On the upper part of her back, the singer got the words "Love Yourself First" tattooed in Arabic.
According to Gomez's tattoo artist, she had been wanting this particular tattoo for a long time and even had it written out the exact way she wanted it to be done before she came in. Gomez quickly shared her new ink with her many Instagram followers.
7. Semicolon Tattoo
This is one of Selena's most recent tattoos — and it has one of the deepest meanings. In April 2017, the singer got a semicolon tattooed on her wrist. She went to get it done with two cast members from the show 13 Reasons Why, which Gomez produces. They were celebrating the show's great success.
However, the semicolon tattoos have a much deeper significance. The tattoos are inspired by an organization called Project Semicolon, which helps to support people suffering from mental health issues. Since Gomez herself has been public with her own issues dealing with anxiety and depression, this tattoo obviously is very meaningful to her.
8. Sunshine Tattoo
This sweet tattoo on the side of Selena's foot is an homage to her grandmother. The singer is very close to her grandmother and has called her my "sunshine."
