Karleen Roy knows how to curate a luxury experience and has the credentials to back it up. From ideating to executing bespoke events to offering lavish concierge services, Roy has worked with the top celebrities in the entertainment industry such as Cardi B, Migos, Kobe Bryant, Rick Ross and more.
As a recognized innovator, Roy also has an uncanny ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment which is partly credited to her time at Island Def Jam Recordings and Bad Boy. As Combs' executive assistant, she was able to hone her business acumen and event management skills while establishing a rapport with key influencers in the music industry.
After 6 years with Bad Boy, Karleen decided to embark on entrepreneurship and founded The Vanity Group, a luxury lifestyle management agency dedicated to creating once-in-a-lifetime experiences for their clients. The Vanity Group was established upon Roy's decision to combine her corporate and luxury management expertise, while leveraging her resources to create a dynamic boutique company which offers services to highlight modern style and quintessential living.
I had the opportunity to speak with Roy about her what inspired her to create The Vanity Group, her time as Sean Combs' executive assistant and her favorite high-profiled event that she executed.
Dominique Fluker: From securing a publicity internship at Island Def Jam Recordings, to becoming Sean Combs' executive assistant to executing high-profiled events for Migos, Cardi B, Justin Bieber and Rick Ross through your own company, The Vanity Group, share your career journey.
Karleen Roy: Early on I knew I did not want to have a "boring career" and that is why I immediately set my sights on New York City after graduating from college. I applied for every entry-level PR job I could and I never got a call back. I met a young lady who was the PR assistant at Def Jam and I BEGGED her for a job. She was upfront with me, and let me know that there are no job openings but I could be her intern. At that time, to "officially" be an intern at Island Def Jam, you had to be a college student, and I had just graduated from college. So I basically had to sneak in the building everyday as a "guest who just never left for the day" and was an intern off the books working in the department. It was a few of us who were college graduates in the building operating off that system and it was great. I'm still friends and mentored to this day by the woman in the department who I interned for.
After a year of being an unpaid intern, I was offered the opportunity to be Ne-Yo's assistant at his production company Compound Entertainment. Ne-Yo had just got signed to Def Jam and I'd made an impression on the marketing executive at Def Jam on his project who actually left the company soon after to become his full time manager. This was a great experience for me because for the first time I was learning what it meant to "move an artist" which is a key skill in artist management and understanding the life of an artist.
