This week on the Hot 100, Drake's new single "Nice For What" begins at No. 1, becoming one of only a few dozen songs that have been immediately powerful enough to launch at the peak of the important listing. In doing so, "Nice" kicks former 11-week leader "God's Plan" out of the driver's seat and into second place. With two No. 1 smashes in a row, Drake has just become the latest artist to replace themselves at the pinnacle of the Hot 100, which remains a feat reserved for only the biggest and brightest of stars.
There are now only 13 musical acts that have timed things so perfectly, they've seen a pair of successful tunes rule one right after the other. The first to do so were The Beatles, who managed the impressive, never-before-seen accomplishment more than once back in 1964. Their single "She Loves You" replaced the syrupy-sweet "I Want to Hold Your Hand," and just a few weeks later, their follow-up "Can't Buy Me Love" took over for "She Loves You.," giving them back-to-back-to-back No. 1s.
It would be three decades before another artist replaced themselves at the top of the Hot 100, and in the years since that second instance of true chart domination, several major players have joined this exclusive club.
The full list of musicians who have replaced themselves at No. 1 on the Hot 100, either as a lead artist or as a featured guest on a song fronted by another name (or perhaps a mixture of the two) now includes The Beatles, Boyz II Men, Puff Daddy (as he was known at the time), Ja Rule, Nelly, Outkast, Usher, T.I., the Black Eyed Peas, Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Justin Bieber and now Drake, who is the lucky thirteenth to join the party.
Of those names, only three—The Beatles, Usher and Justin Bieber—have managed to swap one of their No. 1 smashes for another more than once. Drake isn't included in that even smaller collective just yet, but now that he's announced a new album is coming in June, he may be able to send yet another single from the upcoming full-length Scorpion to No. 1, and if he times things just right, he could become the fourth act to replace himself on the throne several times over. If not, he still has plenty of time to collect more chart-toppers, and knowing how quickly he's able to shoot a new release up the Hot 100, he has a good chance of repeating this week's feat some other time.
