The eight-city expedition is the first-ever United States national tour by the ensemble, known officially as the Cappella Musicale Pontificia Sistina and popularly as "The Pope's Choir." It's the oldest active choir in the world, if not always the most respected; its current director, Msgr. Massimo Palombella, has brought up its reputation considerably in recent years, and the choir was among the winners of Germany's Echo Klassik awards in 2016.
The men-and-boy choir, an ensemble of 20 adult professional singers and the Pueri Cantores, 35 boys between the ages of 9 and 13, specialize in Renaissance music and Gregorian chant chosen from the archives of the Vatican Library. The choir takes part in papal celebrations in St Peter's Basilica, and in the Sistine Chapel.
The tour company is Concerts West/AEG Presents, which handles tours for the likes of Taylor Swift, the Rolling Stones and Justin Bieber, and presents more than 40 music festivals, including the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
AEG has booked the choir into an unusual set of venues for a choir of this sort, especially one specializing in early music and known for the distinctive acoustic that shaped its sound. In St. Louis, one might expect to find them at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, for example; instead, they'll perform in the Fox Theatre, where they will require amplification. In New York, the choir will sing in Radio City Music Hall, while in Chicago they'll be in the cavernous Arie Crown Theatre.
