Is Selena Gomez gaining weight because she's on a break from Justin Bieber? A tabloid is trying to connect her appearance to an apparent split from her on-and-off boyfriend. But Gossip Cop can bust the story.
In its new issue, Starfeatures an article with the cruel headline, "Beefing Up After Bieber?" The gossip magazine asserts that while Gomez is "perennially pin-thin," she's now "sporting a fuller figure since splitting" with Bieber "for the umpteenth time." A so-called "source" is quoted as saying, "For so long she's been avoiding carbs and calorie counting. Her friends told her it's time to stop worrying about diets."
The outlet seems to be suggesting that Gomez was preoccupied with dieting while dating Bieber, and now that they're currently on a break, her pals are supposedly encouraging her to indulge. As evidence, the publication maintains Gomez recently "flaunted her curvy new bod during a postbreakup, girls-only getaway" in Australia. The tabloid further claims that the "change in latitude changed her attitude, too," citing the recent Instagram post Gomez made about the "beauty myth."
The magazine concludes its piece by declaring, "Go and love yourself, girl!" Of course, the outlet isn't actually concerned about Gomez's well-being. If it was, it wouldn't have concocted a story about her physical appearance and said she's "beefing up." There's also a few falsehoods and key omissions. For starters, the singer-actress didn't go on a "girls-only getaway" because of a breakup with Bieber. As Gossip Cop has already reported, Gomez went Down Under for the Hillsong Colour Conference. When not at the formal gathering, she hung out with men as well as women, as seen in the video that accompanied the aforementioned Instagram post.
Her caption about the "beauty myth" was a quote from the conference, and she was inspired to post it after strangers and the media alike used the photos of Gomez in a bikini in Sydney to body-shame her for seemingly gaining weight. The publication doesn't seem to realize that it is now body-shaming her, too, with its fake concern about the change in her size. Furthermore, nowhere does the tabloid acknowledge that Gomez suffers from lupus.
Contrary to the contention that she's "perennially pin-thin," Gomez's weight has actually fluctuated over the years, and the autoimmune disease, along with its association medications, is the reason why. For example, following her kidney transplant last summer, the recovery process led Gomez to lose quite a bit of weight. Now she's put some of it back on. That has nothing to do with whether she's dating Bieber or going diet-free because they're not together. Her shape is going to change regardless due to her chronic health condition, and she accepted that several years ago.
"I did gain weight, but I don't care," Gomez said in a 2015 interview with Ryan Seacrest. That's same year, she posted an Instagram photo of herself fuller figure, writing, "I love being happy with me yall #theresmoretolove." Furthermore, independent of her status with Bieber, the former child star has never been diet-obsessed. "If anybody told me to go on a diet, I don't think they'd be working with me anymore," Gomez told Elvis Duran less than a year ago. To put it bluntly, Bieber is a non-factor in this aspect of her life. The tabloid's claims are sensationally wrong.
