Beloved 19-Year-Old Chef's Documentary Is Showing at SXSW

Famed teen chef Flynn McGarry, who just opened his first restaurant in New York, is the star of a new documentary, Chef Flynn, showing at South by Southwest this year.

At 19, McGarry has already accomplished what many aspiring chefs could only dream of: stints at Alinea and Eleven Madison Park, a cover story on the New York Times magazine, and most recently, his own restaurant Gem. His rise from throwing dinner parties at age nine to being called "the Justin Bieber of food" is captured the documentary.

Chef Flynn, which debuted at Sundance this year, comes from director Cameron Yates. He stitched together footage from the family archives with footage leading up to a much-anticipated pop-up restaurant Eureka in 2014. Varietybills it as a "showcase of his bewilderingly advanced skills" combined with a deeper element of a mother learning to let go so her child can succeed.

Chef Flynn has three screenings during SXSW: Sunday, March 11 at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar at 6:45 p.m., Tuesday, March 13 at the Stateside Theater at 11:30 a.m., and Friday, March 16 at the Alamo again at 11:30 a.m.

Flynn himself will be in town for SXSW, leading to speculation that he will cook something somewhere. That could be unlikely given all the chaos of opening a new restaurant in New York (which has a $155 tasting menu and seems to be getting great reviews so far), but with the 19-year-old's energy and the magic of SXSW, who knows?
