Selena Gomez Breaks Down Her Fashion Awards 2017 Look

"I HAVEN'T been in the space of doing the expected lately," says Selena Gomez from her dressing room seat at Coach's Regent Street store. She's talking about going blonde, and, more importantly, her custom-made dress for tonight's Fashion Awards. "It's still in my comfort zone, but I've loved being able to explore. A lot has kind of happened in the last year, and I'm enjoying wrapping it up in a way where I just feel it is exciting and fresh."

It is an understatement, of course. 2017 has been a significant year for the "Bad Liar" singer. Less than a week after winning Billboard's Woman of the Year Award, Gomez also received a life-saving kidney transplant, started and ended a number of high-profile romantic relationships (The Weeknd and, more recently, Justin Bieber), and released four chart-topping singles in the past 12 months - becoming the most-followed person on Instagram, with 130 million followers, in the process.

That rebellious streak is evident in her dress choice tonight: a long-sleeved, satin gown with a lace hem and small floral accents on the bodice. It's romantic and nostalgic, but in that "Coach American prairie spirit," as the company's executive creative director Stuart Vevers put it.

Paired with dark, goth-inspired make-up and wet-look hair, Gomez finishes off her "dark romance" ensemble with white lace-up boots. "I always feel like the accessories are the whipped cream of an outfit, you know?" she says.

"It's really important for me that Selena feels like her best," explains Vevers, who is nominated for Accessories Designer of the Year, tonight. "I want [the dresses] to always have an ease to them: a sense of movement and freedom. Coach has a down-to-earth approach to luxury, which is different from the traditional European houses. I want to celebrate that ease; that New York City attitude."

This isn't the first time Vevers has created a bespoke look for Gomez - nor is it the first time they have co-designed something (the duo famously created the Selena Grace bag, now sold out worldwide despite having only launched in September). "Working with her is always really fun," he says. "It's great sitting down and talking with a smart, creative person who's got a strong point of view."

When it comes to red carpet ensembles (Vevers was behind Gomez's Met Gala and American Music Awards looks earlier this year), the starting point is always the same. "It's about something I feel strongly about - like a look or an idea; a silhouette or decoration - and then it's that conversation with Selena about how she feels at that moment."

Which begs the question, how does she feel right now? "I feel bold. I feel strong, and I feel like me," she says. And the hair? "The blonde has made feel a little bolder, and I feel confident. I wake up every morning thinking 'oh my gosh,' it's just different for me."

Different, it turns out, isn't always a bad thing.
