Justin Bieber has always been popular with younger audiences, but this latest accomplishment is really something, even for one of the biggest musical acts on the planet. The Canadian pop star's single "Sorry" has just become the fifth track to hit the one billion play milestone on Spotify.
Bieber's "Sorry" joins Drake's "One Dance,"Ed Sheeran's "Shape Of You,"The Chainsmokers and Halsey's "Closer" and most recently, "Lean On" by Major Lazer, in the billion-play group.
When it was first released back in the fall of 2015, "Sorry" was immediately heralded as one of the pop star's best recordings and a serious hit. The dance-pop was filled with undeniable hooks, and it was all but impossible to ignore, even for those who are decidedly not fans of the omnipresent chart-topper.
The song seemed perfect to enjoy a No. 1 debut on the Hot 100—something that is still reserved for only the biggest and most successful names in the business—but it was held back by an even larger song that launched at the same time: Adele's "Hello." Nothing could beat that "comeback" single, though Bieber gave it his best. "Sorry" was forced to languish in the runner-up position for many weeks, until Adele's latest chart owner finally stepped aside and allowed Bieber's Skrillex-produced single to ascend to the throne for just a single frame (though it likely would have earned many more had it not been competing with Adele).
"Sorry" served as the second official single off the pop star's Purpose album, which was also regarded as some of his best work. The record hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and launched a trio of leaders on the Hot 100 ("What Do You Mean?," "Sorry" and "Love Yourself"), which were his only three No. 1 hits at the time.
Speaking of those two tracks, they appear to be next in line to hit one billion streams as well, and it might not be very long until one, or both, of them, join this incredibly exclusive club, making him the only artist in history (for the moment, at least) with more than one single with a billion plays.
