Everything you need to know about the 2018 Grammy nominations

This past week the list of 2018 Grammy nominations were released and the public had mixed reactions. We had some moments the mainstream media could not deny, with black and Latinx artists dominating the major categories.

In addition, R&B artist SZA is the most Grammy-nominated woman with five nods. Hip-hop mogul, Jay Z leads the pack with eight nominations followed by Kendrick Lamar with seven. Bruno Mars and SZA have six and five nominations, respectively. While some are excited for the upcoming awards show, many are confused. How did we get here?

Well, let's recap.

The 2018 Grammy Award nominations can't be viewed without context. Last year, Frank Ocean protested the event, citing the nominations and awards often favored white artists. Kanye West, Drake and Justin Bieber all followed suit. You may remember Ocean's expansive note on Tumblr where he discussed his doubts, such as Kendrick Lamar's 'To Pimp A Butterfly' losing the Album of the Year award to Taylor Swift's '1989.'

Now nearly a year removed from the 2017 event, this year's Grammy lineup features more black artists in marquee nominations. The Record of the Year award features four black artists and also the Latino duo of Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee. Although the nominations are apparent, it is clear that the Grammy's themselves are not solely to thank as hip-hop and R&B continue to make waves in pop culture.

Best Rap/Sung Performance is another category that warrants attention.

Consider nominations for the award; "PRBLMS" by 6LACK, "Crew" by Goldlink Featuring Brent Faiyaz & Shy Glizzy, "Family Feud" by Jay Z featuring BeyoncĂ©, "LOYALTY." by Kendrick Lamar featuring Rihanna, and "Love Galore" by SZA featuring Travis Scott.

The list rightly sits as a microcosm of R&B's success in the last year. Multitalented collaborations are key to many hip-hop hits and this year was no different. Take SZA and Travis Scott or Kendrick Lamar and Rihanna, both duos created widely popular tracks that catered to a crowd that identifies with the music so well.

R&B singer Andra Day revealed the nominees for this year's Grammy's on CBS and sent social media went into a frenzy. Artists like Sam Smith, Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, members of One Direction, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Shawn Mendes and many more pop icons were not nominated in any of the big categories.

While Sam Smith and Taylor Swift released work after the Sep. 30 Grammy eligibility deadline, many are looking forward to their works winning big next year. Rock and country acts were shut out of the top four categories of the Grammys, though they have won those top honors in the past. This year the Recording Academy is looking to ensure Black or Latinx artists win big at the show next year.

Album of the Year – Pop songstress Adele was the winner of the night during the 2017 Grammy Awards, taking home this award along with other awards such as Best Pop Vocal Album, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance for her album '25' and single "Hello" respectively. Social media was set afire by upset Bey-Hive Fans, because many thought she deserved the award for her album 'Lemonade.'

While Adele acknowledged the impact of 'Lemonade' during her speech, it was not enough to make up for what many considered to be a snub. It is important to note that BeyoncĂ©'s work was only available on her husband's streaming service, Tidal. This drew criticism from the public because some consider the streaming service inadequate in comparison to Apple Music and Spotify, possibly resulting in members of the Recording Academy not hearing her album. This year Jay Z returns as a contender for the award for his latest album, '4:44.' In it he addresses topics such as his ego, racism and the marital strains caused by his infedlity. For some, 2018 will be the year of The Carters but we will see.

Album of the Year nominations are:

'Awaken, My Love!' by Childish Gambino

'4:44' by Jay-Z

'DAMN' by Kendrick Lamar

'Melodrama' by Lorde

'24K Magic' by Bruno Mars

According to the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, the Record of the Year category recognizes the artist's performance as well as the overall contributions of the producer(s), recording engineer(s) and/or mixer(s). The Song of the Year category recognizes the songwriter(s).

Record of the Year – Like Album of the Year, Adele won this award last year as well. After three years of the public yearning to hear from her she released her album '25' with the song "Hello" as the lead single. "Hello" reached number one in almost every country it charted in. By the end of 2015, it had sold 12.3 million units globally and was 2015's seventh best-selling single. However, the song was released after the Sep. 30 Grammy eligibility deadline, so it was a contender for the following year. This year may take a turn towards hip-hop with two songs in the category. Records nominated for the 2018 Grammy's are:

"Redbone" by Childish Gambino

"Despacito" by Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee Featuring Justin Bieber

"The Story Of O.J." by Jay-Z

"HUMBLE" by Kendrick Lamar

"24k Magic" by Bruno Mars.

Song of the Year – Yet again, Adele was the winner for this award at the 2017 Grammy's. Songs nominated for this award at the 2018 Grammy's are

"Despacito"

"4:44"

"Issues"

"1-800-273-8255"

"That's What I Like"

Best New Artist – Chance the Rapper was the winner of this award at the 2017 Grammy Awards. Chance's third mixtape, "Coloring Book" was released, streaming exclusively on Apple Music. It became the first release to chart solely on streams. The artistry displayed by Chance brought a fresh unconventional approach to Rap Music. He infused elements of gospel, R&B, jazz, pop and stole the hearts of many. With this year being deemed as "the year of the woman" many are leaning towards this award being given to SZA, but we will see. Artists nominated for this award at the 2018 Grammy's are:

Alessia Cara

Khalid

Lil Uzi Vert

Julia Michaels

SZA

The 2018 Grammy Awards take place in New York City on Jan. 28, 2018.
