Katy Perry and The Weeknd sparked rumours that they're dating last week after the Fireworks hitmaker and Starboy singer were spotted dining at Madeo in West Hollywood, California.

But, it appears that Katy's public liaison with the 27-year-old chart topper was little more than a ploy to upset his ex girlfriend Selena Gomez, after she was pap'd at a party getting close to Orlando Bloom.

Orlando was Katy's first serious boyfriend since she divorced Russell Brand, and source explained: "Katy has a long memory and she never forgets.

"She didn't like that everyone thought Orlando had cheated on her with Selena in Vegas that time - even though Orlando and Selena said they were just friends, it was very embarrassing for her.

"Katy is not doing anything wrong right now - Selena has moved on from Abel with Justin [Bieber] but I think she'll love the idea that Selena will be shocked when she sees Katy and her ex out together.

"If she does get upset, it'll be payback for how Katy felt after THOSE Vegas pictures.

Katy and The Weekend – real name Abel Makkonen Tesfaye – were also seen having fun at the Delilah club in California earlier this month. 

But their flirtatious dates come just weeks after he split from Selena following 10 months of dating.

It's thought that their respective schedules tore them apart, with a source saying at the time: "She and Abel have been going back and forth for a few months about their relationship.

"It's been hard with him being on tour and her shooting in New York. That wasn't easy on them."

However, the plot thickened when just days after they split the 25-year-old singer was seen with her teenage sweetheart Justin Bieber.

A source added previously: "[They are] exclusive. They're really happy and enjoying this time together. They've both grown a lot over the years and are excited to have reconnected.

"Justin definitely had to prove himself to her friends to regain their trust and he's doing a good job.

"Her friends have come around and can see that this time is different."
