MTV Video Music Awards: Could Kendrick Lamar lose Best Hip-Hop Video … to Justin Bieber?

Could Justin Bieber actually upset Kendrick Lamar at the MTV Video Music Awards for Best Hip-Hop Video? That seems like an unlikely scenario given that Lamar has the most VMA nominations this year (eight) and is certainly better known for his hip-hop prowess than Bieber. But let's not forget that the VMAs are a fan-voted award, and Bieber is nevertheless nominated as a featured artist on "I'm the One" by DJ Khaled, so it's certainly in the realm of possibility for the pop star to win this category.

"I'm the One" is a hit summer single from Khaled's 10th studio album, "Grateful," and it featured not only Bieber but Quavo, Chance the Rapper, and Lil Wayne, so there are several fan bases that could propel the song to victory. It doesn't hurt that "I'm the One" really was the one: specifically, it hit number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for one week, and it's been a top-five hit ever since, which shows just how popular it has been just as fans are voting for the winner in this category.

"Humble" by Lamar also hit number-one, but unlike Lamar, Bieber is actually still at the top of the chart even now. As of this writing he has spent 12 weeks at number-one with his follow-up "Despacito," on which he is a featured artist for Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee. So music fans are currently hearing Bieber on two of the biggest hits of the summer while they're voting for VMA winners, but is that enough to overtake the Lamar juggernaut? Bieber is a two-time VMA winner — Best New Artist for "Baby" (2010) and Best Male Video for "U Smile" (2011), but he hasn't won since then.
