Kiwi designers land jobs with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

It was a phone call that changed their lives. One day Kiwi designers Dylan Richards and Sebastian McGirr Hunt were in Auckland, the next they found themselves in LA preparing to meet rapper and fashion designer Kanye West.

McGirr Hunt told Daily Mail Australia: "I was on my deathbed one hungover Sunday, Dylan ran in screaming that Kanye West was about to call us personally. The next day we were in LA."

The pair, both 24, have since been on a whirlwind ride, living out the dream they predicted for themselves years ago.

'We literally used to tell friends one day we would get to style Kim Kardashian and they would laugh," said McGirr Hunt.

Following a series of impressive international styling roles, including for Parris Goebel's ReQuest Dance Crew in Justin Bieber's Sorry music video and a string of high-fashion styling jobs, the duo were reportedly scouted on social media and now work with both Kim and Kanye, helping with day-to-day fashion duties.

They also joined Kanye on his The Life of Pablo tour, which McGirr Hunt says was "mind blowing."

"Being on Kanye Wests The Life of Pablo tour has to be the highlight of my whole career so far."

But while their success may sound like it happened overnight, it's been a tough road for the determined pair.

Richards' interest in fashion began at the age of six. He would often dress his friends and still does.

He went on to study at two tertiary institues but only spent a year at both citing frustration with how much of a focus the courses put on theory.

Similarly, McGirr Hunt found the learning environments he experienced creatively stifling.

"I got kicked out of high school, and dropped out of university after about two months because it just wasn't for me. I didn't have the patience for a fashion degree to be apart of the industry," he told Daily Mail Australia.

Instead, the pair both interned at a fashion PR showroom where they say they got great hands-on experience and were inspired to begin working on their own projects.

They say working oversees was always their goal too. "New Zealand is great, but it's just very small and limiting when it comes to fashion," says McGirr Hunt.
