WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) - A few hours after the White House announced that President Trump and the First Lady would not attend the Kenndey Center Honors, the center penned their own response to the president.
The Kenndey Center said they were "grateful" the president has chosen not to attend so the event can remain focused on the Honorees.
The White House said earlier Saturday that the president didn't want "political distraction" to take away from the event.
Presidents have traditionally hosted a reception for the Honorees at the White House before the gala. On Friday, the entire President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities resigned in protest to the president's recent remarks on the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia last weekend.
Trump blamed "many sides" for the events that lead to the death of an anti-racism activist.
Kennedy Center Honorees this year are writer and producer Norman Lear, hip-hop artist LL Cool J, singers Gloria Estefan and Lionel Richie and dancer Carmen de Lavallade.
This ceremony will be the 40th anniversary of the awards.
