Bareilles to act on Broadway
NEW YORK (AP) — Sara Bareilles' songwriting skills are all over the new Broadway musical "Waitress" — and soon she will be, too.
The singer-songwriter of "Brave" and "Love Song" will make her Broadway acting debut on March 31 in the lead role of Jenna Hunterson. She'll be in the show for 10 weeks until June 11.
The musical tells the story of a waitress and pie maker trapped in a small-town diner and a loveless marriage. It's adapted from a 2007 film starring Keri Russell. Bareilles will take over from Jessie Mueller, who won the best leading actress Tony Award for playing Carole King in the musical "Beautiful."
Bareilles has already released her versions of the musical's songs in "What's Inside: Songs From Waitress," including the standout single "She Used to Be Mine."
She joins other composers who have gone into their own Broadway shows, including Sting in "The Last Ship" and Green Day's frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, who made several onstage visits to his show "American Idiot."
Man claims assault by Bieber
CLEVELAND (AP) — A Las Vegas man who says Justin Bieber assaulted him in Cleveland eight months ago has filed a police report about the fracas.
Thirty-four-year-old Rodney Cannon claims in the report filed with Cleveland police that the pop star took Cannon's sunglasses inside a hotel after a Cleveland Cavaliers playoff game on June 8. He says in the report that Bieber and possibly a bodyguard punched him, and that he wrestled Bieber to the ground to restrain him.
Bieber's publicist didn't immediately return a message seeking comment on the accusations.
Cannon referred questions Wednesday about the encounter — and why he waited to file the report — to an attorney who also didn't immediately return a message.
A Cleveland police spokesman says the episode is under investigation.
Rhett, wife expecting and adopting
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Country singer Thomas Rhett's family is growing by two in 2017. The "Die A Happy Man" singer announced on Twitter that his wife, Lauren, is pregnant and they are adopting a child from Africa.
The couple, whose last name is Akins, posted a photo of themselves with the word "baby" spelled out in balloons with the caption, "Life is about to get crazy!" They are vocal about their support for adoption and have helped raise money and volunteered on mission trips with the nonprofit 147 Million Orphans.
Married in 2012, the couple appears in the music video for his No. 1 country hit, "Die A Happy Man," which earned him a Grammy nomination this year.

Stars condemn bathroom bill
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Musicians Lady Gaga and Alicia Keys along with Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence are among more than 140 artists and celebrities condemning a Texas "bathroom bill" targeting transgender people.
Britney Spears and late-night host Jimmy Kimmel also signed a letter Tuesday criticizing the Republican-backed efforts as a "denial of basic human dignity." The bill would require people to use bathrooms that correspond to the sex on their birth certificate.
It's similar to a North Carolina law that prompted rockers Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen to cancel concerts in that state last year.
The Texas bill has yet to receive even a preliminary vote but public pressure is ratcheting up. Last week, the NFL suggested that Texas could be passed over for future Super Bowl sites if the proposal became law.
Downey, Linklater team up for film
NEW YORK (AP) — Richard Linklater and Robert Downey Jr. are teaming up to make a film adapted from a podcast.
Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures announced Monday evening that it will produce the untitled film, with Linklater directing and Downey Jr. starring. It will be based on the episode "Man of the People" from the Reply All podcast. The episode, which aired in January, chronicles the true story of a doctor who scammed his way to fame and fortune, and the doctor who brought him down.
Downey Jr. previously starred in Linklater's animated "A Scanner Darkly." The new film will be a break from Downey's Iron Man duties, which include the upcoming "Spider-Man: Homecoming" and next year's "Avenger's Infinity War."
Linklater is also prepping "The Last Flag Flying" with Steve Carell and Bryan Cranston.
