Not only can't Justin Timberlake stop the feeling, he also can't stop the sales. "Can't Stop The Feeling," his exuberant feel-good song from Trolls, is the top-selling song of the year.
The song, co-written with Max Martin and Shellback, has sold 2.4 million downloads in 2016, according to Nielsen Music and been streamed nearly 700 million times.
The track, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May to become Timberlake's fifth solo chart topper, was named the No. 1 adult pop song of the year by Billboard, as well as landed in the year-end Top 10 for Hot 100 songs and pop songs and Top 5 for radio songs.
As impressive as Timberlake's download numbers are, last year's top seller, "Uptown Funk," dwarves that figure. The Mark Ronson/Bruno Mars tune sold more than 5.4 million downloads. As consumers shift more to streaming, it will be interesting to see if a song ever crosses that threshold again.
"Feeling's" success makes its exclusion from the best song and record of the year categories for the upcoming Grammy Awards all the most surprising. Its lone Grammy entry when the nominations were announced last week came in Best Song Written For Visual Media. The song did snag a Golden Globe nomination for best original song on Monday and is a strong contender for a nomination for a best original song Oscar when they are announced in January.
