Since leaving the hospital after suffering a breakdown, Kanye West has found support from friends and family — including mother-in-law Kris Jenner's boyfriend Corey Gamble.
"They have a great friendship," an insider tells PEOPLE of the rapper, 39, and Gamble, 36, who works with famed music manager Scooter Braun.
According to another Kardashian source, Jenner is a staunch supporter of the friendship. "Kris makes sure that they're close," says the source. "Kanye doesn't have that many friends, so she definitely encourages them to hang out and do things together."
This week, Gamble accompanied West on a trip to New York City. On Monday, the pair were spotted in Manhattan on an apartment-hunting trip before dropping by a recording studio. Then, on Tuesday, Gamble joined West at Trump Tower, where the Grammy winner sat down with President-elect Donald Trump and his daughter Ivanka Trump to talk about "life" and "multicultural issues."
Another family source tells PEOPLE the pair became close through the Kardashian-Jenner family, shared interests and overlapping social circles.
"Kanye appreciates how much Corey cares for the family and all he does," the family source says. "They have a lot in common, including music, and know many of the same people."
Indeed, West's famous wife Kim Kardashian West, as well as his in-laws, are friendly with pop star Justin Bieber and his manager — Gamble's colleague — Braun. And Gamble has been romantically linked to the clan's matriarch, Kris Jenner, since 2014.
West and Gamble's trip to the East Coast came just two weeks after the rapper suffered a psychotic emergency, which led to a hospitalization at UCLA Medical Center, where he was treated for sleep deprivation and exhaustion.
In addition to appearing on Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Gamble has often turned out to support West. In February, he attended the rapper's music fashion show, Yeezy Season 3, with the Kardashian family at Madison Square Garden; more recently, he joined the family at West's Saint Pablo Tour stop in Inglewood, California.
