From the moment the American Music Awards decided to announce the addition of The Weeknd to its list of performers by livestreaming a superfan getting the singer's signature "XO" tattoo on Facebook, it was clear this award show was going to go all out for the fans. And in case the custom-tattooed fan didn't drive the point home, one look at this incredible lineup of A-List performers should.
The 44th American Music Awards, hosted by Gigi Hadid and comedian Jay Pharoah, airs live on Channel 2 on Sunday, Nov. 20th at 8 p.m.
The full slate of artists set to perform is a distinctly diverse one: With performances by a rock/rap mashup of Maroon 5 and Kendrick Lamar, pop icon Justin Bieber, rockers Green Day and legendary singer Sting -- there's a little bit of something for everyone.
Other highlights include two of 2016's biggest collaborations: Ariana Grande will perform with her "Side by Side" collaborator, Nicki Minaj, and The Chainsmokers will perform their hit "Closer" with Halsey. Bieber is beaming in from Zurich, Switzerland with a performance from his Purpose tour. Niall Horan will fill the void left by that One Direction hiatus and perform his debut song as a solo artist. Also slated to play are John Legend, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Twenty One Pilots, Fifth Harmony, James Bay, and Shawn Mendes.
Perhaps the biggest moment of the night? Sting will perform at the AMAs for the first time -- and will also be the recipient of this year's Award of Merit, an honor doled out to artists who have made exceptional contributions to the music industry. The last person to win the award was Annie Lennox in 2008.
When it comes to the nominees, Drake is having a pretty good year with a record-breaking 13 nominations. Rihanna comes in second with 7 nods and Adele and Justin Bieber are both up for 5.
