A TAMWORTH singer songwriter has released a charity remix of one of pop sensations Justin Bieber's classic hits to raise money and awareness about mental health.
Alistair Gilbert, of Amington, has created a new version of Bieber's Cold Water to raise money for the Movember Foundation and is also planning to hold an open mic night to reinforce this further.
Alistair, who has suffered with mental health problems himself, feels this cause is especially poignant and is hoping to raise up to £1,000 for the cause.
He said: "I started the project a couple of weeks ago in order to try and break down some of the stigmas attached to mental illness.
"I suffered from an episode of depression in my late teens and kept it to myself as I thought this was the best way to deal with it and that if I did talk about it I would be seen as weak.
"This was completely the wrong way of tackling this silent illness as the best thing I ever did was to seek help and talk.
"As a result with the help of friends, family and counselling, I was gradually getting better and back to my old self.
"I lost my motivation and passion for things that I once loved, such as football, subjects at school, music, socialising and feelings of emptiness, lethargy and worthlessness all can be signs.
"The song I have chosen has lyrics that are especially meaningful to this and I decided to choose something that was well-known as I thought it would attract more people and raise more awareness.
"I want to raise as much as I can for the foundation and help fight against mental illness."
Alistair will be sharing the track via YouTube, Spotify and hosting an event at a venue yet to be arranged, in November, to raise money for the foundation.
Rebekah Ryan, who appeared on this year's X Factor is also hoping to release her own charity single for charity CLIMB.
She was delighted for Alistair and hopes he too can raise awareness for his cause.
She said: "There really isn't enough awareness out there for mental health so anything that Alistair can do to raise awareness is brilliant.
