Selena Gomez used to date Justin Bieber. They officially broke up in 2011, but that doesn't stop the media from capitalizing on that fact. In May, the pair was appointed Instagram's most liked couple—even though they hadn't been together for several years, the throwback photo that garnered all those double taps is very powerful. And now, in an interview with Vogue Australia, Selena Gomez proves this theory further: she's never going to fully shed the Bieber narrative from her story.
The piece never officially mentions the Biebs by name, but it's pretty clear he's there: "For a while my private life was the most talked about thing," Gomez told the magazine. "Nobody really knows everything and they can only assume. You want to do what you love but all this other stuff overshadows it so it makes it a little harder for people to take me seriously."
The singer also told Vogue that she's trying to date right now, but she realizes how difficult it is to be in a relationship with such a public figure. Even as she's trying to move on, Bieber's presence is always there, as it is in nearly every piece of news about Selena Gomez. The Vogue interview delves into the backstory of her single "Same Old Love," which is about this exact topic. "'Same Old Love' is so obvious in what it's about; it's a cycle of a very vicious relationship," Gomez explained. "Even though that is such a huge narrative of my life . . . I was so adamant that I didn't want that to be my story."
Gomez has been keeping busy on her Revival tour, and she just made her high-fashion debut in Louis Vuitton's new Series V campaign. Long ago are the days of Bieber renting out entire movie theaters to impress her on extravagant date nights—although he's still pulling this move with current dates.
Gomez's actual story—at least the one she tells publicly—hasn't featured Justin Bieber in some time, but he's stuck there like gum on her shoe. In all likelihood; however, she'll still be answering questions about her relationship with the Biebs when she does her first interview for A.A.R.P. magazine a few decades from now.
