Justin Bieber Shows His Stripes in Sportscore

Oscar Wilde once wrote, "Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months." And while Wilde's words feel especially prescient in the countdown to next month's runways, it appears that Justin Bieber is already ushering the latest take on style: sportscore. Like its lo-fi cousin normcore, the ethos of sportscore puts a fashion-forward slant on humdrum athletic-inspired pieces. The recent rise of labels taking cues from streetwear—think Fenty x Puma, Vetements, and Yeezy—has bent the rules as we know them. This is the era of wearing a sports jersey top with wide-leg trousers, slipper slides with fancy frocks, and even a pair of slouchy shorts with a tailored top. And in keeping with that vibe, last night in Los Angeles, the newly Instagram-free Bieber stepped out in a gold-medal-worthy look ideal for reworking during the remaining dog days of summer.

Bieber's Supreme jersey captures the classic cool of a Yankees pinstripe jersey but without any of the team affiliation politics. It also acts as a perfect topper should the superstar want to dress it up with a suit and sneakers for a modern take on Mario Sorrenti's throwback style. Hood By Air's graphic athletic-minded shorts provide subtle contrast, allowing the sandals to steal the show. Grounding the Bieb's look are skate label Vans flats, which are given an extra inning of chic through novelty socks. And while some trying out this look might want to swap out the slides for stilettos, the Purpose singer is certainly making a compelling case for hitting it out of the park.
